An analytic model of the tropical cyclone outer size

چکیده
Abstract There are simple conceptual models of tropical cyclone intensification and potential intensity. However, such a framework has been lacking to describe the evolution outer circulation. An analytic growth model size is derived from angular momentum equation. The fits full-physics idealized simulation. lifecycle composite best-track shows strong super-linear nature, which supports an exponential as predicted by model. climatology measured radius gale-force wind in North Atlantic Eastern Pacific during period 2004–2017, can be understood terms four factors model: initial size, duration, mean latitude, top-of-boundary-layer effective local inflow angle. All variables significantly different between two basins. observed lifetime maximum follows lognormal distribution, line with law proportionate effect this well global time constant approximately equal product Coriolis parameter angle above boundary layer. Further sensitivity experiments suggest that interannual variability largely driven variation duration.

An environmentally forced tropical cyclone hazard model
A physics-based statistical stochastic system is developed for estimating the long-term hazard of rare, high impact landfall events globally from ensembles of synthetic tropical cyclones. There are three components representing the complete storm lifetime: an index-based genesis model, a beta-advection track model and an autoregressive intensity model. All three components depend upon the local...

متن کاملThe Influence of Tropical Cyclone Size on Its Intensification
This study investigates tropical cyclones of the past two decades (1990–2010) and the connection, if any, between their size and their ability to subsequently undergo rapid intensification (RI). Three different parameters are chosen to define the size of a tropical cyclone: radius of maximum wind (RMW), the average 34-knot (kt; 1 kt5 0.51m s) radius (AR34), and the radius of the outermost close...
متن کاملA Minimal Three-Dimensional Tropical Cyclone Model
A minimal 3D numerical model designed for basic studies of tropical cyclone behavior is described. The model is formulated in s coordinates on an f or b plane and has three vertical levels, one characterizing a shallow boundary layer and the other two representing the upper and lower troposphere, respectively. It has three options for treating cumulus convection on the subgrid scale and a simpl...
متن کامل2b.6 Relating Tropical Cyclone Rainfall Patterns to Storm Size
During the period 1970-1999, Rappaport (2000) found that almost 60% of TC-related deaths in the U.S. were due to fresh water floods caused by heavy rainfall. To reduce this statistic, it is important to improve the accuracy of TC rainfall forecasts by examining the spatial distribution of the rain shield about the criculation center of the storm. Previous researchers have investigated TC rainfa...
